AHIMA lists 3 ways to better prepare for audits

In a recent article from the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), experts discussed three possible methods to reduce the increasing amounts of audits received by providers and health information management (HIM) professionals.

Healthcare organizations have seen an increase in audits over the past few years, leaving providers and health information management (HIM) professionals wondering when they will be audited next. In the AHIMA article, experts outlined three practices for HIM department to adopt to improve preparation of audit requests.

The practices suggested for HIM department adoption included creating a centralized audit management system, continuing education of HIM teams and performing internal audits.

“Awareness and education are keys to alleviating audit pressure,” said Wylecia Wiggs Harris, PhD, CEO of AHIMA. “Every member of the HIM team should understand how audits work and why they are important. It’s another step toward ensuring the integrity of data.”
