The American Medical Association has elected its new board of trustees for 2019-2020, with women physicians as the highest elected officers for the first time.
Patrice Harris, MD, was recently sworn in as the 174th president of the association, while Susan Bailey, MD, is the AMA’s new president-elect and will assume the role in 2020. In addition, Jesse Ehrenfeld, MD, was named the new chair of the board of trustees during the AMA’s annual meeting in Chicago in June.
The board of trustees members are elected by physicians and medical students who gathered at the annual meeting for the AMA’s House of Delegates, its policy-making branch.
Other officers on the board of trustees include:
- S. Bobby Mukkamala, MD, an otolaryngologist from Flint, Michigan, the newly elected secretary
- Jack Resneck, Jr., MD, a dermatologist from San Rafael, California, the newly installed immediate past chair
- Bruce A. Scott, MD, an otolaryngologist from Louisville, Kentucky, the newly elected speaker of the AMA House of Delegates
Beyond the main officers, the association named newly elected members to the board:
- Grayson W. Armstrong, MD, MPH, an ophthalmology medical resident at Harvard Medical School in Cambridge, Massachusetts
- Lisa Bohman Egbert, MD, an OB-GYN from Dayton, Ohio, is also the newly elected vice speaker of the AMA House of Delegates.
- Sarah Mae Smith, a medical student at University of California, Irvine's School of Medicine
- Michael Suk, MD, JD, MPH, MBA, an orthopaedic surgeon based in Danville, Pennsylvania
- Willie Underwood, III, MD, MPH, a urologist based in Buffalo, New York
