CMS launches interoperability database

CMS has announced the launch of the Data Element Library (DEL)—databaste for supporting the exchange of electronic health information.

The free, centralized data base gives users a view on specific types of data CMS requires from post-acute care facilities to collect as part of the health assessment of patients. The assessments available include data on demographics, medical problems and other types of health evaluations. Healthcare facilities integrate this patient data into their electronic records systems to be used for payment by CMS, quality measurement and quality improvement.

The DEL also includes health information technology standards that support the collection of health information. The comprehensive database services as a one-stop shop for health IT vendors to incorporate data elements into electronic health records used by post-acute care providers. This integration allows for improved interoperability between one provider to another.

“We’re excited to add this important building block to the foundation for interoperability that CMS is helping to establish,” said CMS Administrator Seema Verma. “The DEL supports the use and sharing of data, and aligns with MyHealthEData, a governmentwide effort strengthening the interoperability of health information. It also closely aligns with CMS’s Patients Over Paperwork initiative focused on reducing administrative burden and costs while improving care coordination, outcomes and patients’ ability to make decisions about their own care.”
