Google Cloud has reached a new deal to develop AI-powered healthcare solutions for the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD).
The Defense Innovation Unit (DIU), an organization tasked with scaling commercial technology for the DoD, selected Google Cloud for the project.
Google’s team will be tasked with delivering augmented reality microscopes to the DoD and giving DoD clinicians access to AI models designed to improve cancer detection. The goal is to improve care while also lowering the costs associated with providing healthcare to the U.S. military.
“To effectively treat cancer, speed and accuracy are critical,” Mike Daniels, Google Cloud’s vice president of the global public sector, said in a statement. “We are partnering with DIU to provide our machine learning and AI technology to help frontline healthcare practitioners learn about capabilities that can improve the lives of our military men and women and their families.”
The project’s initial rollout will include Defense Health Agency treatment facilities and Veteran’s Affairs hospitals throughout the United States. Funding is to be provided by the DoD’s Joint AI Center.
