The Blavatnik Family Foundation has pledged $200 million to Harvard Medical School, the university announced last week.
The university plans to use the funding to support several new initiatives, including providing new tools for researchers and hiring experts in artificial intelligence, machine learning and augmented reality. The university will also create an umbrella research organization called the Blavatnik Institute at Harvard Medical School.
The $200 million gift is the largest gift the medical school has ever received, according to the university. In a statement, Harvard President Larry Bacow described the gift as an “unprecedented act of generosity and support,” while Harvard Medical School Dean George Daley said the gift was a “transformative opportunity.”
“This is who we are; this is what we do,” Daley said in a statement. “Today we are here to set the course for an even more impactful future.”
