Digital Surgery, a London-based health tech startup, unveiled a dynamic artificial intelligence (AI) system designed specifically for the operating room. The reference tool, called a “Google Maps for surgery,” by one of its developers, helps surgeons during complex procedures.
The system used cameras and computer vision to monitor activities during surgeries. Individuals get audio and visual cues from the system, with the ability to control the system via wireless foot pedals.
“What Digital Surgery has done with this technology feels like a comparison with the advent of laparoscopy, which was a truly disruptive and groundbreaking revolution and paradigm shift in surgery,” said Sanjay Purkayastha, a surgeon at Imperial College in London who used the AI to perform a bariatric procedure, in a statement. “I expect there to be a transformation from non-AI to AI-supported surgery as common practice, benefiting training, patient safety, data collection, and outcomes analysis."
