New York University is moving up graduation for its 2020 class of medical students so the new doctors can jump right into helping with the COVID-19 pandemic.
New York is one of the states hit hardest by the virus, with New York City reporting more than 20,000 cases as of March 25 and about 75% of the state’s 366 deaths. Governor Andrew Cuomo has sought to get more physicians into the healthcare system. NYU’s Grossman School of Medicine typically graduates between 100 and 150 students each year and cited Cuomo’s directive as a reason for moving up graduation.
The option is available to students in the class of 2020 who have met all graduation requirements and volunteer to NYU hospital system’s internal or emergency medicine departments in April, TIME reported.
