Robert Wilkie—scheduled to be sworn in as the new Secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs on Monday, July 30—has big plans for reorganizing the upper levels of the agency. His efforts are aimed at boosting flagging morale while ensuring leadership remains nonpartisan.
The Washington Post examined the VA during the transition from previous VA Secretary, David Shulkin, to acting secretary Peter O’Rourke, to Wilkie. John Hoellwart, communications director for AMVETS, an advocacy group, told the Washington Post that the VA has been in flux for some time.
“Over the last year at VA, widely publicized internal political turmoil among senior officials has gotten in the way of serving veterans,” Hoellwarth said, “and it seems like Wilkie is acting decisively to stamp that out on his watch.”
