A new national index showing levels of job satisfaction among nurses has Michigan Medicine and Houston Methodist tied for the top spot overall, at least within the “hospitals and health systems” subcategory.
On the other hand, the list comprises 200 of the largest entities employing nurses, and these include non-hospital employers.
When opened to display all entities, the index shows travel nursing companies dominating the leader board for the overall ratings.
Other employer categories include home healthcare providers, operators of senior living facilities and staffing agencies.
Drill-down categories, each of which has its own ratings, include organizational support, compensation, workload and toxicity of culture.
The index was compiled by researchers at MIT Sloan Management Review. The analysts arrived at the ratings by reviewing some 150,000 workplace reviews that nurses have posted in free text to Glassdoor.com.
The review period spanned from the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic to June 2023.
The authors note that, among nurses who quit during that time window, “toxic culture” was more than twice as predictive of overall job satisfaction as compensation or workload.

Not faring much better are Prime Healthcare Services, Cape Fear Valley Health System, Wellpath, Genesis Healthcare and Acadia Health.
