The family of deceased rock star Prince is suing a doctor they said prescribed pain pills, claiming the physician did not treat him for opiate addiction and bears some responsibility for his April 2016 death.
Michael Schulenberg, MD, prescribed oxycodone, a different opioid than he had been taking, to the singer just before his death. Schulenberg denies any wrongdoing, though he paid $30,000 to settle a federal civil violation regarding illegal prescription habits.
Prince’s family is seeking damages in excess of $50,000. This lawsuit will replace one previously filed in Illinois court.
"Prince lived in Minnesota all his life and passed away here, so we always thought his family's lawsuit belonged in Minnesota," attorney John Goetz said in a statement. He said they now have sufficient legal grounds to pursue the lawsuit in Prince's home state.
