Date breaches have been dominating the news in recent months. Hackers have stolen patient records then sold them on the black market.
With data breaches constantly happening in our healthcare system, why haven’t hospitals intervened and updated their security?
A recent study by Brookings has found that since late 2009, 155 million Americans have had their medical information stolen through 1,500 breaches—and these attacks don’t come cheap. With future projections stating that more than $305 billion in damages will be needed over the next five years, with one in 13 patients having their information hacked.
“With the industry so focused on regulatory compliance as it moves to digital record-keeping, cybersecurity has largely been a secondary thought,” according to Lisa Gallagher, former vice president of technical solutions at the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) in Chicago.
